The heat claimed another victim this week as the Greater Milwaukee Association of Reators was forced to close its office after the air conditioner conked out on Monday.

“It’s a 30-year-old building and it’s been serviced several times over the last several years,” said association president Mike Ruzicka. “For the past couple of years, he’s told us, ‘You guys should really think about replacing it.’”

The duct tape gave way and the conditioner died Monday morning after two weeks of heading downhill, Ruzicka said. The association’s building, at the corner of West Center and North 124th streets, has an older design, so office workers cannot open the windows to circulate air from the outside.

“We had to have two doors open with fans in them,” Ruzicka said.

The association closed its offices on Wednesday, but crews are coming in with a new air-conditioner Thursday, Ruzicka. The office was to be closed anyway on Thursday because everybody will be at the Ironwood Golf Course in Sussex for the annual association outing, he said.

The office should be back open Friday.
